Interview with Steve Crossland, Owner
Give us some background on your business:
I started my practice in November of 1973 in Cashmere, WA. Crossland Law specializes in business and commercial law.
How has your business changed in the last 10 years due to changing technology?
Technology has changed the way I practice law drastically. Legal research is one of the major ways. When I first started practicing law, all we had was books. And as you can imagine, those books were very expensive. As a small firm it was difficult to have an extensive legal library. Now, the state bar has a website that allows licensed attorneys to access all the legal information I need…and it’s free.
E-mail has revolutionized the way I communicate with my clients and other lawyers. Before e-mail, most of my clients had to physically come to the office. Now, for example, I had a client who was leaving the country and wanted to update his will. I can make the changes, e-mail it to him, he can look it over and it’s done that day. The transfer of documents to clients is instantaneous, not four days with snail mail. It is far more efficient.
What advice would you give to other businesses that are reliant on technology?
Get the best technology you can for a price you can afford. Also, work with people who are on the cutting edge. Clear Focus always informs me of new emerging technologies and trends that could help my business.
How has Clear Focus helped your business?
Technology has changed my practice…Clear Focus has made that a reality for me. CompleteCare is a wonderful concept. I don’t want to worry about the computers of my network, I just want to focus on practicing law. Clear Focus allows me to do that.
Financially, CompleteCare just made sense. It’s budgetable, and it makes life so much easier. I didn’t want to function in crisis mode anymore. I wanted to take a proactive approach.
